My Me: How You See Me

***This was written on January 1, 2016***
***Inspired by Rachel SuperStarr Black***

Genesis 1:26-27: “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

All focus and attention is on me.
I’ve got the spotlight,
I’m in the center.
I’m within everyone’s sight.
I’m the presenter,
The opening,
The act,
And the rest;
Which is awful, considering I’m not looking my best.
What?
You don’t believe me?
You think I look well and fine?
My clothes and jewelry and face creates this false idea of “well and fine.”
You can look at me and say, “That person has style,”
But I ask you, can you identify my smile?
Any liveliness in my walk?
Do you see the smallest hint of joy in my eyes?
See, this style is a disguise.
I’m hiding from the lies
And cries
That I
Have to face everyday.
You see someone who’s really got it going on,
But I see the person I’ve been all along.
When I stare at the glass reflector,
I see shame.
I see despair.
I see ugliness.
I look into the soul of this person in the glass reflector and ask,
“How can anyone see someone who’s “well and fine?”
Are they blind?
No, they can see.
They just don’t know the real me,
The me I have to live with everyday of my life.
I know the lies I gave,
The mistakes I made.
This awful load I’m carrying weighs me down to the grave.
Or, I wish it did.
I want to die.
I hate me.
Who could love someone like me?
Why would someone allow me to live?
Who in their right mind would make me,
Shape me,
Create me?
…Oh, that’s right.
God.
Jesus.
Lord, God above me,
Do You still love me?
How could Someone like You love someone like me?
I’m not “well and fine” like other people are.
I’ve shamed Your Name more times than I can count.
So, You can understand how I may have doubts
That Someone like You can love someone like me.
But You still made me, and allowed me to live.
What is it about me that You find so lovely?
What do You see when You look at me?
It can’t be what I see.
Is it my soul?
My spirit?
My talents, my heart, my mind?
What is it that You see that I don’t? Am I blind?
Show me, God.
Let me see me that way You do.
Help me love me the way You intended me to.
Who am I? What am I in You?
I’m tired of seeing myself as ugly and dumb!
That’s not how You made me!
That’s not who You see!
That’s not who I am!
I am a child of Jesus the King!
No attire or style or material things
Can make me any greater than I am!
God, I am Yours!
You made me strong!
You made me bold!
You made me excellent!
Smart!
Successful!
Gorgeous!
Talented!
Victorious!
I am Yours! Now I see
How You see me.

I Don’t Have…

***This was written on August 6, 2015***
***Dedicated to Fatima Imani Smith***

I don’t have the imagination to make you gifts and things
I don’t have the money to buy you diamond rings
I don’t have the kind of voice you’d love to hear sing all day
I don’t have the power to take all your problems away

I don’t have the muscles to make you feel secure
I don’t have the words to make you feel right and sure
I don’t have the intelligence to discuss random facts
I don’t have the artistic intellect to share how I feel about that

I don’t have the creativity to tell you in different ways how I feel
I don’t even have the skills to make you a delicious meal
I often times can’t share my emotions because I don’t have the nerve
I don’t have the means to give you anything you truly deserve

I know I’m not good enough for you, and my description tells you why
You deserve a king who can give you a grand castle in the sky
I cannot give you the world, but there’s one thing I can do
I can give you this phrase – this promise, three words that are true

I love you. I love you every single day
These are 3 words I’ll never be too shy to say
I’ll scream it from every mountain, every valley, every corner
I’m a stranger to many things, but when it comes to loving you I’m no foreigner

You are constantly on my mind. I think about you day and night
You are my rock, you are my Queen, you are my smile, you are my light
You are someone I know I can’t live without
Your sexiness sends me thrills, have no doubt

I will be the man you deserve – I’ll be the man you need
God will give me the strength and wisdom to protect, provide, and lead
A pauper I am now, just begging for a chance
But I’m growing and learning. I’m changing my stance

I’ll drop my selfish desires, I’ll forsake my pride
If it means that forever I’ll be at your side
Let me be there to make you laugh, build you up, and strengthen you
Don’t underestimate what my love is able to do

I may not be able to give you the world on a platter of gold
But I can give you much if you stay in my arms for me to hold
I may be making changes, but one thing is forever true
I will never ever, ever stop loving you

Benjamin Isaiah Black’s “FINALE: Curtain Call”

***This was performed live on April 22, 2015***

This was the last show I performed before I graduated. It’s me doing what I do best, doing what I love to do. It’s poetry, it’s mime, it’s film, it’s theatre, it’s music, it’s entertainment, it’s inspiring, it’s encouraging, it’s uplifting, it’s art, it’s godly. I hope you enjoy it! God bless you, and I love you!

You Are the Music to My Soul

***This was written on May 31, 2015***

You are the music to my soul.
There is no doubt about that.
I feel your melody playing.
I am your harmony saying
Continue your sweet sound.
Let me be your instrument.
Use me as your muse, your inspiration.
I breathe your creation,
Your art from your heart.
You start the beat that sets the foundation to my life.
You add the rhythm that gives me the energy to move.
A day doesn’t pass without me hearing you.
Don’t change one note from your composition.
I feed on it.
I yearn for it.
I learn from it
How to live.
You give
Me
Music for my soul.
You keep me from being alone.
I need your tune to keep me alive.
May it never change,
Never be rearranged.
It is my life.
You are my life.
You are the music to my soul.

When Was the Last Time?

***This was written on July 21, 2014***

Jesus, when was the last time I stopped to say “Thank You?”
When did I last show gratitude for the many things You do?
May I never get too busy to thank You for shining You Light
You allowed me to see this day when I shouldn’t have made it through the night
I’m not strong enough to make it on my own
When I thought I didn’t have a friend, You showed me I’m not alone
Yes, God. I just wanted to say thank You.

Jesus, when was the last I stopped to praise You?
Throughout all the situations I faced, You always brought me through.
When was the last time I acknowledged Your goodness toward me?
You gave me feet to walk, hands to touch, ears to hear, and eyes to see.
You’ve looked out for me more than I’ve looked out for myself.
Even when I don’t realize it, You’re there surrounding me with Your care.
Once I fell You gave me Your Hand, and I had the strength to stand.
So when I lift my hands and a smile spreads throughout my face,
Know that I’m praising You for Your incredible, amazing Grace!
Oh, yes. I will stop to praise You!

Jesus, when was the last time I stopped to say “I love You?”
“You’re first in my life, there is no one above You?”
I love You because You first loved me.
There’s no debating after seeing Your sacrifice on Calvary.
You, the Son of God, the Son of Man,
Hung on a tree with thorns in Your head and nails in Your Hands;
Blood pouring down Your Face, pain running through Your body.
You went through all of this just for me?
A sinner who isn’t worth 2 cents?
A worm?
A slimball?
A wretch?
For me?
Knowing that it should have been me on that cross,
Pierced in both sides, having a worthless life to be lost –
You knew I should have been cast down into Hell with my soul burning in sufferage,
And yet You died in my place?
There was nothing I did to deserve Your Grace!
You shouldn’t have done it, didn’t have to do it,
BUT YOU DID!!!
I love You, Jesus!
If I didn’t say it before, I’ll say it now: I love You!

Teach Me How to Love Me Like You Do

***This was written on July 16, 2014***

You knew me even before I was born
In my mother’s womb, I was formed
Before I spake, You knew my name
I know You created me for a purpose, not in vain

You knew what I’d be like, You knew what I’d become
You knew how I’d grow in my days of young
From my head to my feet, You formed my design
And so, if I may ask You a question so Divine…

Teach me how to love me like You do
Teach me how to love me like You do
If I’m Your child, Your creature,
Help me adore all of my features
Jesus, teach me how to love me like You do

My skin, the fabric of body, its texture and its color
My feet, whatever the size, they’re mine – You didn’t give them to any other
You coiled each individual piece of my hair
And with these beautiful eyes You gave me, I can look and gaze and stare

You love how I look, and You love all my quirks
You knew how I should appear, You did the design work
You don’t make mistakes; there are no flaws in Your plans
So I ask You to do this one thing, if You can…

Teach me how to love me like You do
Teach me how to love me like You do
If I’m Your child, Your creature,
Help me adore all of my features
Jesus, teach me how to love me like You do

My teeth, my lips, they help me to form such a pretty smile
The way I talk, the way I walk, they both contribute to my unique style
My voice, my size, my height all help my individuality
You knew what You were doing when You made me, Lord; You helped develop my personality

You love the way I look, and You love all my quirks
You knew how I should appear, You did the design work
You don’t make mistakes, there are no flaws in Your plans
So I ask You to do one thing, if You can…

Teach me how to love me like You do
Teach me how to love me like You do
If I’m Your child, Your creature,
Help me adore all of my features
Jesus, teach me how to love me like You do

Jesus, Tell Me You Love Me

***This was written on January 26, 2014***

Jesus, tell me You love me. That’s all I need to hear.
Tell me that You love me. That’ll calm my every fear.
I sometimes struggle to believe You could love someone like me.
Jesus, tell me You love me.

Jesus, tell me You love me. Please don’t deny Your Grace.
Tell me that You love me. It’ll bring a smile to my face.
You are everything I need, which is why I’m making this plead.
Jesus, tell me You love me.

Jesus, tell me You love me. Lighten my heavy heart.
Tell me that You love me. Reassure that from me You are nor far apart.
Lord, I can’t make it without You. Without You, God, what will I do?
Jesus, tell me You love me.

Jesus, tell me You love me. Tell me all of my days.
Tell me that You love me. I will give You praise.
Help me give You all of me, just as You did on Calvary.
Jesus, tell me You love me.

Jesus, tell me You love me. Father, I love to know.
Tell me that You love me, and in You, Love, I’ll grow.
Please don’t pass me by; tell me these words, and I’ll lift Your Name on high.
Jesus, tell me You love me.

Jesus, tell me You love me. That’s all I need to hear.
Tell me that You love me. That’ll calm my every fear.
I sometimes struggle to believe You could love someone like me.
Jesus, tell me You love me.

What Happens When 2 Souls Come Together?

***This was written on July 15, 2013***

What happens when 2 souls come together?
What happens when they join as one, and remain as one forever?
What happens when these souls vow to never part, never?
What happens next, you may fantasize?

When he stands in awe of your beauty, gazing in your eyes,
You stare into his, and as you look you realize
That he loves you so much that he will publicize
To the world how much he loves you.

And now you see in her eyes she cannot wait to say “I do.”
You send up a prayer thanking God for all He’s brought you through;
He allowed turmoils to make you stronger – He challenged you two,
And so you look up and smile towards the sky.

God looks back at you, and His smile grows wide.
He sees each teardrop of Joy you cried.
You can’t help but shed another when you hear your God up high
Say, “My son, I am so proud!”

In Heaven, a trumpet sounds.
The angels are celebrating, their cheers are loud.
They praise God that your love for her is greatly abound –
Listen to their great joyful noise!

You kiss, and hear your close and loved ones rejoice.
They clap, they stand, their cheers join as a unified voice.
So much celebration and joy, all because you made the choice
To join your 2 souls together.

No More Love

***This was written on December 30, 2012***

No more melodies, all the songs have been sung
There is now a blank space where the stockings were hung
As the boxes and wrappers are thrown out of the gift that were brung
The love goes with it

No more need for large meals for the whole family
Gifts are best when found under the tree
There are more thoughts and actions of selfishness and greed
Love is longer here

The homeless aren’t helped or thought of anymore
The hungry aren’t fed, and forgotten are the poor
Better times came during the Season, but not a day before
Love only comes once a year

Bask in the goodness of the season while it’s still here
Enjoy it now before it eventually disappears
Unless times change, then I fear
Love will be absent for a while

I Love You

***This was written on June 25, 2012***

Hey there, friend. How do you do?
If you’ve got a moment, I’ve got something to share with you.
I don’t want you to question your worth or rue the day of your birth.
Don’t worry or wonder if anyone loves you –
I’ll raise my hand and tell you: I do.
Yes, my brother, my sister, it’s true.
My love for you is strong, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Don’t get discouraged by loneliness or despair.
There’s no more need for crying over the thought that no one cares.
Yes, I’m here for you and I’m not going anywhere.
If you need a hand to help you up, I’ll extend mine.
You need me to give you my attention? That’s just fine.
Whether you need to rest on my shoulder, or whisper something in my ear,
I want you to know that I am here.

No, I won’t speak against you and I won’t turn my back.
You’re too special to me to treat you poorly.
I can’t forget you, you won’t be ignored;
I love you with the Love of the Lord.
He is Love, and He first loved me.
Though I deserve to be chained in my iniquities, He made me free.
He loves me too much to let me stay the same – He makes me better and new.
And because I’ve received His Love, I want to share It with you.
Tell me what you wish and I promise not to judge.
You’re my brother and my sister for life.
I just wanted you to know I love you.
