Too Bad, So Sad

***This was written on January 4, 2015***
***This was performed in Benjamin Isaiah Black’s FINALE: Curtain Call***

I hear tale you don’t like me.
Too bad, so sad.
You don’t approve of my name, Bro. B.I.B.
Too bad, so sad.
So you don’t like my clothes or my style?
Too bad, so sad.
You take issue with my face and smile?
Too bad, so sad.
Someone told me you don’t like how I walk.
Too bad, so sad.
Let me guess, you’re not fond of how I talk?
Too bad, so sad.
You claim there’s something wrong with the pencils I wear,
Too bad, so sad.
And yet, you continue to gaze and stare.
Too bad, so sad.

I’m sorry, let me break for a minute.
If you’ll be a dear, please lend an ear and hear what I have to say.
I understand you take issue with me.
So, maybe I can be loud sometimes.
I’m not always good at expressing what’s on my mind.
I make it a point to give you the real deal of how I feel about something.
Modern pop music: I had it, and I’m not afraid to debate it.
I can’t stand popular fads, they hurt my brain.
Based on my attire sometimes, you’d swear I’m insane,
And I don’t claim I’m not.
I can’t pretend I don’t know why you don’t like me a whole lot.
I’m not fool, I get it.
It’s cool…And yet that
Doesn’t mean I’m changing who I am for you.
Suck it up. Get over it.
You want me to renounce my identity so you can feel better?
Will it make you feel swell, or
Cool like an evening in the summer weather?
Then forgive me for not allowing your feelings and thoughts toward me to change who I am.
No. I take that back.
I’m sorry I was sorry.
I don’t need your forgiveness to be myself.
I don’t need your permission to be free to be me,
Free like an eagle flying high though the sky with his wings spread wide going as high as he may please
‘Cause he’s free.
Not bound by any limitation
He flies with no hesitation.
Likewise, I will not be bound by you.
It doesn’t matter what you say or do.
I’m here to honor Father God, not be pandered by you,
So shoo…and don’t bother me.

You find it odd that I use “crud” and “heathen” in my speech.
Too bad, so sad.
Or that I may randomly dance as I’m walking in the streets.
Too bad, so sad.
There are many things about me I must improve,
Too bad, so sad.
But my focus is on God, not trying to please you.
Too bad, so sad.

Journal Entry: New Years Resolution 2015

***This was written on January 2, 2015***

Dear Journal,
Happy New Year! I’m excited about 2015. Next Wednesday, after ACTF, I begin my final semester at Ashland University! It’s been a long ride, but it’s been a fantastic one! I’d be lying if I said I weren’t a little nervous, but I’m excited to see what God has for me!
With a new year comes resolutions. Every year I pray, “God, may I be better this time next year than I am now.” Why in the world did it take me this long to realize how bland and vague that is? I don’t know, but let me fix that now. I’m going to list the top 3 things I want to work on this year:
• Work smart. I’ve been known for working hard: doing a million things at once, keeping late hours, the whole nine yards. But I don’t always work smart. I shouldn’t always sacrifice sleep and food to get work done. I need to focus and follow through with the goals I set for myself. This year, I will work smart.
• Develop my talent. The best moments my talents had a chance to grow was in class or when I was doing something with them: when I was in a play, or when I was writing. I want to continue getting better. I cannot and will not sit on the talents God has given me. This year, I will continue to develop my talent.
• Deepen my relationship with Jesus. Often times I find myself having so much fun or working so hard that I forget about Jesus’ love and care. After all that Jesus has done for me, how dare I forget about His goodness? I want to be closer to Him. I need to dive deeper into His Word, pray more, and start fasting again. Jesus us the most important person in the world to me, and I will honor Him by putting Him first. This year, I will deepen my relationship with Jesus.
So there it is! These are my resolutions for the year of 2015! I can’t wait to see what all God has in store for me! Happy New Year!

A Dead Life

***This was written on October 7, 2014***

The air in my lungs is gone
My heart no longer beats
The feeling in my body is absent
I am cold as ice
I have no soul
No control over the darkness that surrounds me
This deadly plague that bounds me
I am condemned to a prison with no air
No warmth, no care
No windows or light that I may see at night
I am bound, yet there are no walls
I am caged, but there aren’t any bars
I lower my head and accept the truth:
I am dead
That is what I am without You
What is life if You are not here?
What is its worth if You’re not near?
Every morning I open my door to be greeted by depression
Recession
Agression
And I must make the confession that I want to die
Why?
Because living without You is like waking up to a morning where the sun forgot to rise,
Walking through the forest, and the birds deny you their chirping and singing
Not being able to hear the most pleasant chimes ringing
Playing a song with no music, but its lyrics so abusive
Going through an entire year in which the seasons never change,
It’s always the same
And it drains the life from me to live without You

Get Out of My Way

***This was written on July 9, 2011***

I know You have a plan for me
Often times I don’t pursue it because I’m lazy
Although Your plan I can’t always see
Help me get out of my way

My problem is allowing my flesh to take control
I think I’ve got it all together only to watch my head roll
I need to pursue what You put in my spirit and soul
So that I can get out of my head

I also become paralyzed by fear and blinded by lies
Thoughts of doubt and failure swim in my mind
I’m so tired of the tears these thoughts have driven me to cry
I’ve gotta stop and get out of my way

God, I don’t know how to let go and let You
I keep messing up be doing what my flesh wants me to do
Lord, help me overcome my own will and do what You want me to
I MUST get out of my way

Your plan is to make me better and more strong
If I jeopardize Your Will, what You have going on,
Then I’ll never get Your gift or sing Your song
Jesus, I need to get out of my way

Help me commit myself to Your Will
To go against You would make me spiritually ill
I often move from Your plan – help me be still
Help me get out of my way

Sometimes I do whatever I want
And I block Your blessing from me, causing me to feel like a runt
I deny my own chances of being greater, and the pursue to be better is like a hunt
When the crud will I get out of my way?

Lord, please forgive me actions and sinful ways
I must change my attitude if I want blessings for the rest of my days
So help me, Jesus, and allow me this opportunity to say
I will get out of my way and Yours’

God, I Lift My Hands

***This was written on August 17, 2010***

CHORUS
God, I lift my hands
I marvel at Your Glory
You’re worthy to be praised
Oh, God, I lift my hands
I marvel at Your Glory
You are worthy to be praise

VERSE I
The angels bow at the sight of Your Glory shone
You hear my pain underneath my every groan
Oh, God, I see You’ve been there for me when I was lost and all alone
And now I give You praise for giving life to my dead bones

CHORUS

VERSE II
Where would I be if it had not been for You?
You held my hand, You kept me safe and guided me through
The hurt and pain, the storm and rain, so I must give praise to where it’s due
If You had dropped me, Jesus, tell me what would I do

CHORUS

BRIDGE
I lift my hands, I lift my voice
Lord, You are worthy to be praised
I lift my hands. I lift my voice
Lord, You are worthy to be praised
You are my Rock, You are my Peace
Lord, You are worthy to be praised
I clap my hands, I pat my feet
Lord, You are worthy to be praised
I give You worship, I give You glory
Lord, You are worthy to be praised
I bow down at the sound of Your Name
Lord, You are worthy to be praised
You are my God, You are my All
Lord, You are worthy to be praised
I lift my hands, I lift my voice
Lord You are worthy to be praised

Daddy

***This was written on August 13, 2010***

God, when I think of You, what do I think of?
I know You’re my Master and Ruler, You are Joy and Hope and Love
But You’re also something else, it’s so simple and true
You serve me, not just on a spiritual level, but on a personal one, too

Jesus, I call you “Daddy”. You’re more than a Father to me.
Some believe the two words mean the same thing, but they’re different, You see
The father is the man who made the child
While the daddy provides for his kids, raises them right, and helps them smile

Like a daddy who keeps picking up his son who fell down
And makes a smile out of his frown
You, too, help me stand and heal my cuts
You always help me up no matter what…

(ANITA is on the ground crying; DADDY comes over)

DADDY.
Anita? Anita, are you alright?
ANITA.
I-I was riding my bike…and I fell down!
DADDY.
Aw, come here. Let Me hold you. It’s alright.
ANITA.
I’m never going to ride again!
DADDY.
Oh, you don’t mean that!
ANITA.
Yes I do!
DADDY.
…Why?
ANITA.
Because every time I start riding, I fall down! I don’t wanna fall anymore! I don’t wanna fall—
DADDY.
(Wiping her tears) Ssh, ssh. OK. It’s alright. Listen to Me, are you listening?
ANITA.
Mm-Hmm…
DADDY.
I want you to wipe yourself off and ride again.
ANITA.
But, Daddy, I’m hurt!
DADDY.
I know you are, honey, but don’t use that as a reason to stay down. You’re a big girl, and I know you can do it!
ANITA.
But—
DADDY.
Trust Me, Anita. I won’t ask you to do anything that will hurt you. Can you trust Me, Anita?
ANITA.
…Yes, Daddy.
DADDY.
Good girl! I’m right here, OK?
ANITA.
OK.

(ANITA begins riding her bike again, and is riding wonderfully so far)

DADDY.
You’re riding beautifully, Anita! Beautifully!

(ANITA swerves the wrong way)

DADDY.
Uh-oh. Be careful, Anita! Be careful!

(ANITA falls down)

ANITA.
Daddy! Daddy, help!
DADDY.
Get up, Anita! You can do it!
ANITA.
Daddy…

(After a bit of hesitation, ANITA stands up, wipes herself off, and continues riding her bike)

ANITA.
Look at me, Daddy! Look at me!
DADDY.
I see you! Good job, Anita! I’m so proud of you…

Despite all the things I’ve done to cause You pain
The shame I brought upon the family name
When I apologized and tried to make it up to You, You said, “That’s OK.”
In return You hugged me and loved me and wiped my tears away…

DADDY.
Jenni, what’s the matter?
JENNI.
Daddy, I wasn’t working last night like I told You. I really went to a party, the one at Dave’s house.
DADDY.
The one I told You not to go to?
JENNI.
Uh-huh…
DADDY.
Well, what happened?
JENNI.
One of the guys there…h-he…
DADDY.
Did someone put their hands on you, Jenni?
JENNI.
(Begins bawling) He raped me, Daddy! He raped me!
DADDY.
He WHAT?!? What’s his name?
JENNI.
…Rick Parrymore.
DADDY.
Do you know him from anywhere other than the party?
JENNI.
From school…
DADDY.
Mmm…OK. We’re going to find him, do you understand Me?
JENNI.
Yes, sir.
DADDY.
Good…(Sighs) Now come here.

(JENNI moves closer to DADDY)

JENNI.
Yes?
DADDY.
Give me a hug.

(DADDY and JENNI hug)

JENNI.
I don’t understand, You’re not mad at me?
DADDY.
I’ll admit that I’m disappointed, but I’m glad I can hold you in My Arms again. You see, I knew what could’ve happened to you, which is why I didn’t want you going over there.
JENNI.
But I did anyway…
DADDY.
We’ll deal with that later. Just know that everything is going to be alright – I’ve got you now.
JENNI.
How can You be so calm? This isn’t the first time I disobeyed You, and You’re still so…so…so Loving! How can You be so Loving?
DADDY.
Jenni, I thought you would’ve realized by now that I love you. I don’t care how many times you mess up, even if you do make the same mistake over and over again; I will always love you, no matter what!
JENNI.
…Really?
DADDY.
Really, and that’s a promise!
JENNI.
I love You, Daddy!
DADDY.
I love you, too, Jenni…

My prayer is that more and more every day, I’ll resemble You
I want to look like You, Daddy! When I grow up, I’ll do what You do!
Let people know that I’m Your son when they look at me
By my presence let them know I’m a part of Your family…

(BRO. B.I.B. is walking; MARQUIS walks past him, stops, and turns around)

MARQUIS.
Excuse me, sir?
BRO. B.I.B.
Yes?
MARQUIS.
I’m sorry to trouble you, but you look familiar to me somehow…
BRO. B.I.B.
Oh, that’s quite alright, sir. I get this all the time.
MARQUIS.
Oh?
BRO. B.I.B.
Yes, you must be thinking of my Daddy.
MARQUIS.
You’re Dad…OH! I am so sorry, silly me! I don’t know how I could have missed the resemblance. You’re one of Jesus Christ’s children, right?
BRO. B.I.B.
Indeed I am! Judging by the resemblance, I’d say you’re…
MARQUIS.
Yes, I’m your step-brother.
BRO. B.I.B.
Ain’t our Daddy good, adopting all of us and making us feel a part of the family like this?
MARQUIS.
Yes He is! Well, don’t let me interrupt your walk, but it was good seeing you, step-brother!
BRO. B.I.B.
You as well. Daddy bless you, sir…

You, God, are the best Father ever, the Ultimate Dad
You cheer me up and You make me glad
You taught me how to be a man, You helped me grow
Jesus, You are my Daddy, and I love You so!

Bro. B.I.B.’s Worship

***This was written on July 8, 2010***

God, You are so good
I love You, Jesus. You are greater than life!
Thank You, Lord, for Your ways and for Your Grace.
Jesus, You are too good to me!
Your favor is more than I deserve.
God, Your passion toward me is more than I asked for.
Your Love changed my life.
Your Joy has given me the strength of over one billion men.
Savior, Your Hand has guided me through the thickest of battles.
Jehovah, You gave me Mercy when I deserved justice.
Hosanna, You have given me life, and that more abundantly.
Messiah, You are my Everything!
You are my Light,
My Joy,
My Peace,
My Love,
My Hope.
God, You are my Life,
My Rock,
My Strongtower,
My Guide,
My Fortress.
You’re the center of my Joy.
You are my King,
My Savior,
My Lord,
My Shepard,
My Deliverer,
My Master,
My Teacher,
My Healer,
My God!

Where would I be without You?
What would I do without You, Jesus?
If You did not die on Calvary, where would I be?
“If it had not been for the Lord who was on my side, where would I be?”
God, I need You!
I need You each and every day!
I need more of You like the rain needs the clouds,
Like the day needs the sun,
Like fish need the water,
Like a baby needs her parents.
I need You!
There is nothing I can’t do with You!
In You, I have all that I need.
Fear and worry do not exist in You.
I need Your Strength.
Give me Your Joy.
I long for Your Power, Your Protection, Your Peace!
Make me more like You!
I want to be better than I am, let me reflect Your Light.
Let my life please You.
May You smile and be glad when You look at me!

Lord, You are powerful; God, You are strong!
Jesus, everything You do is great.
It is You who commands the sun to rise.
You are the One who tells the stars to sparkle at night.
You cause the wind to blow and the ocean’s waves to move.
God, You’re the only One who can give life.
At the snap of a finger, You can make the earth shake.
When You clap Your Hands we hear thunder sound.
If a tear falls from Your Face, it rains.
When You smile, a rainbow can be seen.
You allow the flowers to grow,
The animals to live,
And us to have unspeakable Joy.
What can’t You do?
Is there anything too hard for You?
Father, what is too big or too small for You?
You created the entire universe,
You feed the sparrows and give them a home;
You made a man whole when he lost his ear,
You ceased a storm by saying three simple words;
What is too hard for You?
You are perfect.
You have no flaws,
You make no mistakes.

Who is like You, Jesus?
Who comes before You, what comes before You?
Can anyone be compared to You?
Your Name comes above all names.
Your Name means to set free,
To deliver,
To save.
Your Name is Immanuel, “God with us”.
You, and You alone, God, are Alpha and Omega,
The Beginning and the End.
No one comes before You or beside You.
You are God all by Yourself!
Your Will is greater than anything I could hope for.
Jesus, You are stronger than the strong,
You are braver than the brave,
You are smarter than the smart.
You, God, are more powerful than the powerful.
You can hold the entire galaxy on the tip of You Finger.
You can raise a person from his or her grave.
You can give life to dead bones.
You can raise an entire nation from dry rocks.
I said it before, I’ll say it again:
There is nobody like You,
No one in place of You,
No one beside You,
No one above You.

Jesus, I exalt You.
You are wonderful.
Father, You are awesome.
God, You are exuberant.
You’re colossal,
Magnificent,
Stupendous,
Excellent,
Glorious,
Marvelous,
Spectacular,
Lord, You are all that and a bag of chips!
You’re cool,
You da bomb!
You excel everything I need, and You become my all.
I marvel at You.
I adore You.
I glorify You.
Jesus, I will praise You and honor You always.
“To the end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.”
“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
“Magnify the Lord with me, let us exalt His Name together.”
“O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good; His Mercy endures forever.”
“O taste and see that the Lord is good.”
I will not cease honoring You!
You are worthy, more than worthy of my worship!
Blessed are You, Jesus.
Glory to Your Name, God.

Greater Than Life

***This was written on February 13, 2010***

Jesus, greater than life You are
I can call You, and You’re never far

Lord, You are the best thing that ever happened to me
If it had not been for You on my side, where would I be?

Everything I need lies in You
No person or thing of the earth gives me pleasure like You do

Your actions are good and Your Mercy is kind
God, You are always on my mind

Who is He who causes me to wake up every morning
And He who fills me with Joy when I am groaning?

Father, You wipe away my tears and answer my every cry
You gave me Your Hand when I thought I’d die

You deliver me and rescue me from struggling situations
Because I love You and live for You, I won’t face condemnation

Lord, You smile when You look at me, You answer my prayer
You call me Your friend and child, and You keep me in Your care

The things You give me, only You can take away
Mercy and Love are what I receive everyday

Despite the deathful things I witness everywhere I go
Your Goodness and Mercy follows me, this I know

Whether it’s a birth, a passing, or even the planets in orbit
Over all things You have the power and control over it

Deliverance is mine, Victory is mine
Savior, I can tell Satan to get on behind

The Name Jesus is the One above all names
You created the snow, the sun, and the rain

No one is beside or above You – there’s nobody else
I know that You are God all by Yourself

God, You give me pleasure and You give me life
You help me overcome my sins and take away my strife

You are everything I need and much, much more
Jesus, You are the Savior of my life, my God, King, and Lord

Who should I worry about, and what should I fear?
I can face anything and everything knowing that You are here

The Word says that You’re the Way, the Truth, and the Light
Let me say it again, Jesus, You are greater than life

You Are the God of Everything

***This was written on February 2, 2010***

You are the God of everything
You’re the Lord of all lords and the King of every king
Jesus, You are the Ruler of everything there is
God, it’s because of You that everything that has life lives

Who is the One who sets the sun at the right spot when it’s noon?
And who is He that has all the power over the seas and controls the moon?
The rains and winds must obey You
You master the fish in the sea and the birds of the air, too

“Jesus”, the Name above all names
Your praise and Your glory I will proclaim
Absolutely no one, Lord, comes close to You; You are the best
To this, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess

It is You who teaches the eagles to soar
You let the worms move underground and dogs walk across the floor
When the sun rises I wake up, and at night I lie down
But this is due to the Love and Joy I find all around

The entire world is in Your Hands
To every situation, life, and thing You have a plan
You know what You’re doing when You keep us in Your Loving Grace
I know I am safe everywhere I go, every single place

No matter where I am, I can count on You to be there
Your strong power does not block your tender care
I thank You for being greater than I
I can declare Your praises and greatness to the Heavens past the sky

Everything everywhere looks to their Master, You
Without You, God, what would we do?
I need You to live, to breath, to sing
Jesus, You are the God of everything

Father’s Day

***This was written on October 7, 2009***

I received an invitation to a picnic,
Celebrating my Father for Fathers’ Day.
Once I went to the gates and prepared to enter the Heavenly Place,
I became in awe by everything around me.
The sight was more captivating than a woman’s beauty.
I heard the rejoicing sound of a glorious praise.
Before I entered, I was worried that my Father would not recognize me;
My clothes were not purely clean – I had gotten worldly dirt, mud, and stains on them
I tried washing them myself, but I couldn’t get the filth out.
I almost left without joining the party,
I didn’t fit,
I don’t deserve to be apart of my Father’s family.
So I started to walk away and return home
When a Hand touched my shoulder.
This Touch was unlike any that I have ever felt before in my life.
I felt a Power, a release, a deliverance, a Peace unlike I’ve ever felt before.
A Joy and a Love covered me as I looked at my clothes
And found they were clean – white as snow!
I turned around, and there stood my Daddy with the brightest smile I had ever laid eyes upon.
He looked at me, and He said, “I am so glad to see you!
“I could hear your soul crying out to Me, so I stopped everything and rushed over here to see you!”
He gave me the biggest, warmest hugs I have ever received.
I walked through the gates and saw all of my adopted siblings, who were all celebrating their Father also.
With the black, grimy dirt off my clothes, I heard people all tell me the same thing:
“Ya know, there’s something different about you.
“You look different, better than before.
There’s a sense of stillness and Power rests on you.
“I know what it is – you resemble your Daddy!
“You are, truly, your Daddy’s child!”
I just smiled and replied, “Yeah, I am!”
